Nothing says IMPACT like an event….

After a two-year hiatus on in-person events, it has been a busy few months at Fuzion, planning, organising, and executing a number of events for our clients.

From new pet-store openings to live cookery demos, art exhibitions and high-profile national container terminal launches – it has been a whirlwind……..and we love it!

There is nothing like an event to create a high level of impact – through both the media coverage gained, and the all-important lasting impression with clients and stakeholders. Even the simple act of inviting people to your event is an excellent way of getting their attention and making them aware of the initiative.

Events form a valuable part of a communications strategy, connecting clients with their customers, stakeholders, staff, and the local community….it’s all about taking a moment to thank those who are close to you, reinforce those connections, and celebrate the milestone your company has achieved.

The recent launch of the Port of Cork, Cork Container Terminal in Ringaskiddy was an excellent example of creating impact. Not only did we reach almost every news outlet that day – from national TV and radio news bulletins, to print, online and trade publications, but for the 200 guests in attendance, (some of which chartered flights from overseas to attend) the atmosphere created on the day is something they won’t soon forget.

It’s safe to say at Fuzion, we put on a great show!

(Disclaimer: Working in partnership with an amazing, proactive client is also a great help!)

So how do we do it? Here are my top 10 tips to create a memorable event:

  1. Planning – planning in advance is key. Brainstorm, research and map out your event format and a guideline budget. Keep track of your activities, budget, suppliers, checklists and media targets in one, easy-to-follow spreadsheet that all of the team have access to and keep it updated regularly. A well-thought-out running order will be your bible!
  1. Personalise – wherever possible BRAND IT! Creativity goes a long way – from your event invite (we use Greenvelope.com – an e-invite that works a treat), to your catering, decorations, and staging – a running theme helps create a cohesive look and feel. Guests will appreciate the attention to detail.
  1. Guestlist – inviting high-profile guests, relevant to your event, will help attract media attention and adds a layer of esteem to your event.
  1. Create unique experiences – Add a dash of something EXTRA and involve your guests in an interactive experience to add the wow factor. A boat trip, guided tour, a live demonstration or performance….or a trip up a 50 metre high crane – the possibilities are endless!
  1. Make it ‘instagrammable’ – A quirky photo backdrop, mural, balloon art and other branded elements all help to encourage guests to share photos from your event on the day. Set a memorable hashtag for your event and get trending! Video footage, or better yet, drone footage will bring your insta-game up a notch.
  1. Divide & Conquer – behind every good event is a team of people running behind the scenes. Share out as many of the tasks and responsibilities as possible and have regular check-in meetings with your team to make sure everything is on track and everyone knows their role on the day.
  1. Suppliers – work with trusted suppliers, ideally those you have worked with before to ensure the smooth running of your event. Draft briefs for each supplier detailing your agreed setup and timings. A good working relationship with your press photographer is key – to capture ‘the money shot’
  1. Embargo or Exclusive? Select your key target press and contact them with the relevant information well in advance (at least 3-4 weeks if possible). This will allow them time to plan their story, arrange interviews and schedule time to attend the event in their calendar. Draft your press release early, have it approved and share it with select trusted media contacts under embargo. Sweeten the deal with a first exclusive to one of your high-profile national targets – though caution is advised here – choose carefully!
  1. Get stuck in – often with events, not everything is going to go exactly to plan, so allow for flexibility and get stuck in wherever needed. Comfortable shoes on the day are a must…..and breathe!

10. Got to have Swag offering a small gift or goodie bag to guests on departure is a nice touch that will ensure they are taking home something to remember you by…..

We also co-ordinate the speeches, ensuring that content isn’t duplicated (not always easy!) and for the team members who are in the spotlight with the media, we make sure they are well trained and prepared, to ensure that they do manage to communicate the important messages about the respective initiative – there is so much involved!

Of course, this list could go on for days, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach…..but executed correctly with the right event partners, who are as organised as they are creative, you are sure to create a memorable event and that all-important IMPACT.

  1. Tell us something about you that nobody else in the team might know.

A few years ago I dived with sharks in South Africa – it was one of the best experiences ever!

 I’ve definitely watched ‘The Holiday’ way more times than I’d like to admit

  1. What work are you most proud of in the past year?

I am very proud of my work with the Local Enterprise Offices – particularly the Look for Local campaign during the pandemic which encouraged the public to support local businesses.

I’d like to run my own business someday…

I’m a bit of a Zara addict….from their clothes to homeware, it’s probably the brand I shop the most.

Nice, in the South of France. Just stunning!

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a big impact. We are all human at the end of the day so kind words or a simple thank you email can go a long way…

Choose to Challenge – International Women’s Day

International Women's Day - Choose to Challenge

On international Women’s Day 2021, there is a particular theme that was calling women to action with a very proactive ask, “Choose to Challenge” which came with an explanation:

A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change – So let’s all choose to challenge!

With this “call to action” there were some other specific asks of women as outlined further in the IWD website:

How will you help forge a gender equal world?

  • Celebrate women’s achievement.
  • Raise awareness against bias
  • Take action for equality.

Within Fuzion we encourage a challenging environment for all of the team, which is part of our core values, Bravery.

In every job description that we write, you will see it written and to us it is an important attribute, every bit as important as the basic skill sets required for each role.

We challenge each other, our opinions, our views and our ideas and we will challenge our clients to think differently and not to be afraid to disagree when we believe something is going in a wrong direction – you get that with us!

So, with all of that in mind I asked the team to record an episode of the Win Happy podcast to mark this years International Women’s Day, to discuss the theme and the different elements and to see how they felt about them.

For the record, I did offer to pass the hosting duty to anyone else and in the spirit of Fuzion, everyone, male and female were invited to participate but due to workload issues (and maybe a little shyness!) this episode featured Dee (Deirdre Waldron), Suzanne Meade and Niamh Lawlor who are all part of our Communications team.

The conversation was really interesting and revealing.

The team loved the “bold” call to action and spoke about how women can often be more reluctant than men to challenge.

They spoke about emotional leadership, a huge strength that women can bring to any organisation, Dee’s work and initiatives as President of Network Ireland, the huge role of mothers and friends as influencers, that men should be part of the conversation and not excluded, and thankfully they have not experienced bias in their careers.

However, they did acknowledge that the industry that we operate in might lend itself to that.

It makes for good listening.

For the record, some of the very best people that I work with are women and if I thought for a second that they were not prepared to challenge there would be something very wrong.

Just this morning on our weekly “hello” Monday morning team Zoom call, we had a very robust conversation about an opinion that I shared and they came at me in force!!

….if I told you what it was, I could have a busy day getting nothing done except arguing!

So today, I salute the brilliant women that I work with and the many brilliant women that I deal with on an ongoing basis. In particular, I salute my mum who is just incredible, such a positive driving force – you have no idea!

The Importance of Staying Visible..

No matter what way you look at it, the Covid-19 pandemic has been a trying time for everyone. But as the saying goes, ‘with every cloud there is a silver lining’ – which in my view has been the drastic business transformation and surge of digitisation that we have experienced over the past year.

There has never been a time when staying visible online has been more important for business survival.

With doors closing around the country due to the on-going Covid-19 level 5 restrictions, many businesses have had no choice but to adapt ‘from bricks to clicks’ in order to remain viable.

At Fuzion, we work closely with the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs), to help share the stories of the hundreds of micro-enterprises and SMEs around the country with media – in the hope that it will encourage and inspire others who may be looking to start or grow their business – or for those struggling, to contact their Local Enterprise Office for support.

Through this work, I have been fortunate enough to work with some amazing LEO client businesses from all over Ireland – helping to share their stories of how they have adapted / pivoted (…..even battled) through the pandemic and how they have come out the other side with the help and guidance of the LEOs.

The LEO Trading Online Voucher has had particular impact across the country – with over 13,000 TOV’s approved in 2020…… That’s a whopping 13,000 businesses supported with developing or enhancing their online presence!

From this work, my little nuggets of advice to any small business would be:

  • If you haven’t already, contact your nearest LEO – they provide so much support in terms of business advice, mentoring and grants such as the TOV mentioned above, Business Continuity Vouchers, Feasibility Grants and so much more
  • Again, if you haven’t already – get online! A website ideally or a social media channel where you can keep your customers updated, share new products, blogs etc.
  • Try to think outside the box – now is the time to create a new branch for your business or solution for your customers – take the chance it could pay off!
  • Work on your ‘story’ in three short paragraphs & engage with local media to share your story or share via short blogs / social posts
    • How/Why you started the business
    • How your business adapted / transformed – (including any relevant figures such as online sale growth Vs 2019)
    • Any future plans that you have for your business – ie. new employees, overseas expansion, new stockists etc.
  • Good quality, high resolution photography is a must if engaging in any PR / online activity
    • Know your angles
    • Use colourful props or something that explains your business in the shots
    • Images can be taken by a PR photographer or on your smartphone with a family member or friend if taken landscape
  • Create video content – whether it’s short 30’ second “Meet the Team” videos or a “Hero Video” explaining your business proposition – it is an engaging way to reach your audience
  • If you are a sole trader or very small business – it can be an isolating place – join a network or reach out to professionals (such as ourselves 😉) if you need a sounding board or business support
  • Be consistent and persistent
    • Stay visible & keep plugging and reminding people of why you are so great and why they need your products / services!
    • Use social media advertising and Google Ads to your advantage – with so much competition online – it pays off to pay a little!
    • Connect and talk to your audience online – ask them questions and engage – you might learn something new!

Much of this you may already know – but I hope it has helped just to be reminded or re-energised your motivation!

Most of all it is important to know that the opportunity is there for those who wish to dive head first into the challenges – the decision is ultimately yours whether to stay the way you are or take the plunge!

Niche Networking – Cork’s “Mixer On The Mall”

Gin !!

The South Mall is abuzz this week with the chatter of…“Are you going to the Mixer on The Mall?

This new networking event is a refreshing way to kick-start the summer (or lack thereof!) in the style of a good old fashioned ‘pub crawl’ with the added benefit of connecting with friends and neighbours here on the Mall – it’s a real win win!

The inaugural event is being hosted by our friends at Electric and Republic of Work on Friday, June 21st which conveniently, is also the longest day of the year!

The ‘crawl’ commences at Republic of Work with a Graham Norton Irish Gin reception and hors d’oeuvres.

At Fuzion, we recently had a team building day at The Republic of Work’s new event space and I have to say the layout, design and hospitality of this relatively new addition to the South Mall has lended itself to become a real Cork gem.

The mixer then leads onto the Maldron Hotel, the ‘new kid on the block’, for welcome drinks and sharing boards. I have yet to visit so am looking forward to this one!

Following this, the evening then carries on to Electric Bar and Restaurant for cocktails and nibbles – My favourite!

It is great to see a blend of both the Cork business and social scene coming together like this to create a new avenue and incentive to connect.

So often we get caught up with the work on our desks, that we can tend to let networking take a back seat – not giving it the full focus it deserves.

Creating niche networking opportunities such as “The Mixer on the Mall” offers more of a variety, a relaxed vibe and is something that we as a community should do more of and encourage.

Events, as we know, take a lot of time, care and planning to get right – but once executed correctly can have a major impact on the success on the particular brands’ overall awareness, launch or initiative.

At Fuzion we love both arranging and attending events of all kinds!

..So, a big thanks to the guys organising this one, we can’t wait!

Daffodil Day and the Importance of Giving….

Daffodil Day

Daffodil Day is an important day on the calendar for the Irish Cancer Society as it is their biggest fundraiser of the year, which takes place every March 22nd.

Every year millions of euro is raised through the efforts of communities coming together to raise funds (and not forget, raising awareness) to provide those suffering with free advice and support and for life-saving cancer research.

Around the country workplaces, groups and individuals come together in fundraising efforts for this meaningful cause.

On that day, last week the sense of community was rife on the streets of Cork as stalls of Daffodil Day representatives lined each corner, greeting each new donation with a smile of sincere thanks and a beautiful bouquet of spring daffodils.

Daffodil Day resonates in particular for me and for many as it offers hope to those suffering with a potential a break-through that could be made.

In the Fuzion office we rallied together and collected our contributions, which were kindly matched by Dee and Greg – raising a nice sum of money, which we know will go directly to a fantastic cause.

The act of giving sparks joy and we should all be more conscious of giving; whether it’s to a worthy charitable cause, helping out a friend in need, giving thanks to a client or colleague, or being more giving with our time – it all makes a difference – and that is a feeling that you can not obtain from “getting”.

The Value of “The Silver Lining”

So here we are, mid January, 2019.

A coat of grey clouds, perpetually looms above, we get up – it’s dark, we go home – it’s dark.

The twinkle of the festive season has left the lining of the streets and we are left with that slight vacant feeling within. This grim outlook can affect the mood of many of us at this time of year, however, for some, it can seem worse than others.

A relatively small example of this, I experienced myself just this morning. I looked in the mirror as I got ready for the day and while combing my hair, I notice something different – a long silvery line protruding up and out of my scalp and running down between the bristles of my brush..

..The first grey hair of my late twenties!!

Almost instantly, I saw my youth flashing before my eyes – as if it were now a thing of the past. It’s all over.

On my commute to work, I gaze out the train window and the SpotifyRelaxing Deep House” playlist is in full rhythm and I see the shimmery light pink hue of morning sunlight peering through the clouds in the distance and I think to myself, “Things might not be so bad today”.

It’s amazing how even a little ray of light can change your perspective in an instant.

I began thinking about how I can add this “light” to my grey hair dilemma. Ageing isn’t all about lost youth – it means maturing, developing, understanding and ultimately knowing better.

I was fortunate enough to have had the most amazing time in my early twenties, graduating from University and joining one of the world’s best airlines as cabin crew. I was paid to travel the world, staying in five star luxury hotels along the way.

I had the chance to experience life to the fullest, jumping off cliffs and hang gliding over Rio de Janeiro, diving with sharks in South Africa, climbing The Great Wall of China and everything in between.

I did and saw it all. and not to sound ungrateful for these experiences – but it is a lot to leave behind!

I began thinking about all that I have learned from these experiences and how they have shaped my growth, increased my cultural awareness, communication skills, empathy, understanding and patience levels (a solid requirement for any airline employee is to know the value of patience!).  

All of this deep thought really allowed me to see “The Silver Lining” in my new silver line of hair.

This new stripe is a reminder of hard work, late nights, long hours and lessons learned. It also highlights a new chapter of maturity and progression.

I made the choice to return to Ireland, to pursue my career as a PR and marketing professional, something which I had always wanted to do.   

Furthermore, this got me thinking about “reactions” and how often at times, we can be quick to formulate an immediate negative response to the unexpected. An initial reaction can be an exacerbated version of how one would usually react, given the time to digest or dwell on the information presented.

This is something we all should practice – when life throws us a curve-ball, which it often does, take a deep breath, reflect and turn your attention to finding the silver lining as there is always positive to come from negative.

Keeping a positive outlook is important for general life as well as in business when the unexpected occurs.

A first step or an approach could be taking a look at the core values and assets that you have,  pausing and thinking about how you can utilise these to your advantage and to create more positive awareness for your personal situation or brand.

This can open new areas of possibility, which may not have come to light had the unexpected not occurred.

Ultimately, knowing the existence, value and importance of a “The Silver Lining” is what will help shine through on these dark January days, when it may seem the clouds will never shift – but just like with the seasons, there will always be new light.
