The October 2019 Social Media Update – What happened?

October was a busy month for all our favourite social media platforms!

First up, Facebook!

Contrary to the belief that Facebook usage (including ourselves) has been declining, their Q3 update released showed that they are continuing to add users worldwide. However you will see that Europe and the U.S./Canada are quite static.

Here are a couple of changes they’ve made this month:

They have removed the ability to schedule a post on desktop for some users unless you’re posting from the “Publishing Tools” page. This probably makes it easier for those of us that bulk schedule but it’s slightly annoying to lose it completely from a page post.

However, there is good news on the scheduling tools front!

Facebook is reportedly testing a new option within its post scheduling options which would enable Page admins to reach their audiences when they’re most active on the platform. It’ll be interesting to see if this comes in as it could be a very useful tool for marketers.

Was your business verified on Facebook via their grey tick?

From now on, all those grey ticks will be gone. Facebook have made this move because users were confused between those and the blue ticks, which are for public figures, media companies and brands.

Now my favourite…. Instagram!

Instagram (at least it feels like it to me when I’m updating my training presentation!) are always updating different things on the platform. Whether it’s Stories or different user tools, there’s always something new in the pipeline.

They’ve changed the whole layout of their Stories screen for users.

You were able to previously swipe along the bottom for the different tools such as Boomerang and Live, now there is a ‘Create’ option including different Story formats such as a GIF screen, templates to encourage engagement with your followers, and other options such as poll, quiz and countdown which were available previously as stickers.

They are also testing a new sticker as seen by Jane Manchun Wong, called ‘Invites‘ which allows users the chance to RSVP to the sticker once posted. If this comes to pass, it would be a great way to interact with followers working similarly to events on Facebook.

Instagram invites

Another interesting test coming soon will be Instagram sorting users ‘Following‘ lists into different categories including different topics.

Business accounts will fit under the different topics that they would have chosen in their Instagram settings. An interesting list to see will be the ‘least interacted with’ and ‘most shown in feed’, based on the user’s activity.

This could encourage users to unfollow some business accounts, so make sure your content stays engaging for your followers!

Messaging!

Instagram is finally introducing new features to their messaging to allow businesses to reply instantly to messages when they’re not available and also to set up an away message. This will be very useful to help communications with customers and ensure no-one is left waiting without an answer.

Finally…. LinkedIn are launching their own events feature!

It looks like it works similarly to Facebook Events, and it also gives you the option to invite specific people to an event. This will be great for anyone organising networking events, product launches or any other professional events.

Niche Networking – Cork’s “Mixer On The Mall”

Gin !!

The South Mall is abuzz this week with the chatter of…“Are you going to the Mixer on The Mall?

This new networking event is a refreshing way to kick-start the summer (or lack thereof!) in the style of a good old fashioned ‘pub crawl’ with the added benefit of connecting with friends and neighbours here on the Mall – it’s a real win win!

The inaugural event is being hosted by our friends at Electric and Republic of Work on Friday, June 21st which conveniently, is also the longest day of the year!

The ‘crawl’ commences at Republic of Work with a Graham Norton Irish Gin reception and hors d’oeuvres.

At Fuzion, we recently had a team building day at The Republic of Work’s new event space and I have to say the layout, design and hospitality of this relatively new addition to the South Mall has lended itself to become a real Cork gem.

The mixer then leads onto the Maldron Hotel, the ‘new kid on the block’, for welcome drinks and sharing boards. I have yet to visit so am looking forward to this one!

Following this, the evening then carries on to Electric Bar and Restaurant for cocktails and nibbles – My favourite!

It is great to see a blend of both the Cork business and social scene coming together like this to create a new avenue and incentive to connect.

So often we get caught up with the work on our desks, that we can tend to let networking take a back seat – not giving it the full focus it deserves.

Creating niche networking opportunities such as “The Mixer on the Mall” offers more of a variety, a relaxed vibe and is something that we as a community should do more of and encourage.

Events, as we know, take a lot of time, care and planning to get right – but once executed correctly can have a major impact on the success on the particular brands’ overall awareness, launch or initiative.

At Fuzion we love both arranging and attending events of all kinds!

Prince Charles visiting Cork

On Thursday the 14th June, Grand Parade in Cork was full of school children, the media and hundreds of friendly faces all there to catch a glimpse, or for the lucky few a chance to meet, HRH The Prince of Wales and HRH The Duchess of Cornwall.

As the royal couple made their way to the English Market, where they followed in the footsteps of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in 2011, they were greeted by onlookers at every turn and the smiles on their faces showed how much they appreciated and enjoyed the warm welcome they received.

The English Market is one of my favourite accounts to work on for many reasons, and this royal visit was a major highlight. As I stood on the red carpet waiting for the arrival of the highly anticipated guests, I was filled with excitement and pride as I looked around and saw the ‘Céad Míle Fáiltewaiting for them.

It’s true to say we really do give a hundred thousand welcomes and quite literally roll out the red carpet to welcome all who visit Ireland. The royal couple spent approximately an hour in the English Market as they laughed, chatted and even cut the 230th birthday cake for the English Market.

Some people may not favour the royal family or have their own views on the royal couple but the friendliness of the Irish was well and truly on show and the fun and laughter enjoyed by the royal couple on the day really made me proud of all involved and all who and welcomed them with open arms.

This visit has been great for the relationship between our two countries and it also puts a another big spotlight on Ireland as a great and friendly place to visit.

Pippa O'Connor and Brian Ormond at the Opening of The Oyster Bar

Nearly two weeks we had a fantastic night at the highly anticipated launch of the iconic Oyster Tavern, in Cork, just alongside the just as iconic, English Market. The launch welcomed a sea of famous faces and the ‘who’s who’ of the Irish social scene and sports world descended on Patrick Street to toast the new bar.

Stars such as Pippa O’Connor and her husband Brian Ormond and rugby legend,  Peter O’Mahony all donned the red carpet on the night and enjoyed an evening full of surprises as the new Oyster Tavern was finally revealed after a €1.5 million makeover.

However behind every fantastic event is a truck load of hard work, which at the time can be stressful and overwhelming but when it pays off, it is so worth it.

The last two/three weeks in the lead up to the highly successful event there was a huge amount of organisation and to-do lists to be completed and it meant that it was all hands on deck in the lead up to the event and on the night.

I really really enjoyed working on the event with the Oyster Tavern team (what a great team of people) but I couldn’t have done it without the help of my own Fuzion team.

We do event management day in, day out, from large scale high profile events such as the launch of The Oyster Tavern, the launch of One Albert Quay, the launch of Dunnes Stores, Simply Better Cook with Neven range and the launch of Nano Nagle Place to smaller scale ones such as the Summer Food & Craft Fair in Manor West Shopping Centre & Retail Park and the Official Public Dedication of the Kindred Spirits memorial with the Choctaw Nation.

In order for these events to run smoothly there is normally an account manager who takes the lead (which in this case was me) but we do depend heavily on the rest of the team to jump in when necessary and I have to say the team here at Fuzion had my back every step of the way with this launch.

They helped with invites, planning, media, and event management not to mention endless cups of tea, and on the night they came out in force to support the event and support me with any help I needed.

It was a night I felt proud to be part of such a solid and fun team.

The art and power of a good story

We were at the Network Cork awards which was attended by women of all ages who work across all sectors from healthcare to hospitality, legal to media.

It can prove a bit of challenge to design an event, particularly when choosing a speaker and/ or an MC, that will appeal to such a broad and varied audience although we did have one thing in common – we were all female professionals.

Working with clients on events, we know only too well how much thought and debate goes into this element of planning and rightly so, as the speaker’s contribution is often what an event’s success and value is measured upon by the audience – moreover location, food, entertainment etc.

Network Cork got it very right with a speech from the President of Network Ireland Deirdre Waldron who gave her personal story of taking the leap of faith into entrepreneurship that demonstrated the importance of self belief and support from fellow women in business.

This communicated through an impactful story the invaluable support and network that Network Cork and indeed Network Ireland is.

This was followed by a speech from Bernice Moran who few in the room knew before the event but who everyone wanted to be friends with by the end. Bernice is the co-founder and director of luxury confectionery business The Be Sweet Company but she’s not just a female entrepreneur but a Virgin Atlantic 747 pilot and a mum of three children!

She captivated the room with her awe-inspiring story, wit and humble charm. This savvy communicator and business woman sweetened up the room with chocolates (and boosted visual brand awareness with product placement on each table) and she expertly communicated not just her business and product’s key messages and USP’s, but also her own – after all people buy people.

With brilliant skill she told her incredible story of high achievement, “ballsiness”, belief and business all the while being relatable, honest, engaging as well as entertaining. She won the room over and was a talking point among the audience for the rest of the event and thereafter.

I, and many others I know of who attended the event, told other people we met since about her and her story and in doing so we’ve not only helped to spread the word of the brilliant Bernice Moran and her company but of Network Cork and Network Ireland.

This is the perfect result from an event such as this and it just goes to show the power and reach of a good story.

Teaching an old Dog new tricks

Recently a girl on work experience asked me about how I got into PR, what I studied, and how I’ve seen things change in the industry.

It reminded of one particular class in college in 2006 with John Gallagher, our Course Director for the MA in PR at DIT. John was chatting to us about these things called ‘blogs’ – not one of us, out of a class of 40, knew what a blog was, and it was only when one of my ‘brave’ class mates piped up and asked the question, that we were enlightened!

This got me thinking, and I doubt John has been asked that question since… things have changed so quickly in the 8 years I’ve been involved in the PR industry with the advent of social media and advancing technology.

When I joined Fuzion in 2007, Facebook was just rearing its head, Twitter had barely been heard of in Ireland – and as for Pinterest and Instagram, well they were more commonly known as ‘Post-Its’ and ‘Polaroids’! Now me, I’m ‘old-school’ when it comes to PR, I love to pick up a newspaper or magazine, and see a physical press clipping for my clients, but I can’t deny that social media and technology have certainly been a big help in my job, particularly when it comes to event planning and management.

In the ‘olden days’ hours would be spent drawing up invitation lists, and gathering people’s postal addresses, and stuffing envelopes with snazzy invites that so much time had been taken designing and printing. While now, I simply walk down the office to the guys in our design department, brief them on what I want the invitation to look like, and voila…. A file arrives in my inbox that I can simply upload to a system like Mailchimp along with my database of invitees and their email addresses (very little need for postal addresses anymore), I click send, and off it goes into cyber space, arriving in inboxes of everyone I want to reach within mere moments… simples!

But that’s not all, I can analyse exactly who’s opened the invite, how many times they’ve viewed it, if they’ve clicked hyperlinks to bring them to social media pages for the event; the list goes on. If I really want a particular person at the event, but they haven’t opened the invite for some reason, at least I know, and I can make sure to get in touch with them.

As well as sending invitations by email, I also have the opportunity to share details of the event on the various social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Never has it been so easy to communicate with target audiences. To ensure I’m reaching them, I can allocate a small advertising spend targeting a certain demographic if necessary; as well as interacting with them and sharing updates and news about the upcoming event.

Managing a guest list is so easy now. I either receive RSVPs directly into my inbox and manage the guest list from there, or I can set up a registration page using an online ticketing service like Eventbrite, where all registrations are tracked and I know how many tickets are remaining for example. This saves hours of phone calls, making this sort of event preparation and management so time efficient for us and cost efficient for our clients.

As I already said, I’m ‘old-school’ so I won’t dismiss the more ‘traditional’ methods, and will certainly make that call or post that letter if required; and I’ll almost always recommend that we issue a press release with a great PR photo to help promote an event.

For me, it’s a combination of the ‘old’ and ‘new’ that go a long way to making a great event come together.

Fright !

Last week we had a very successful event, the unveiling of the plans for Nano Nagle Place, at South Pres on Douglas Street – an event that we at Fuzion and an initiative that the people of Cork can be proud of.

Even though everything went well on the day and was a great success there was months of preparation and organisation that went into the event and as a result, a number of sleepless nights on my end!

I’m a worrier by nature so organising the Nano Nagle Place event, was something that had me on my toes for the last few weeks.

With so much interest from the Presentation Sisters worldwide, the people of Cork, the media, local businesses, relevant organisations and the general public and so much to organise including invites, heating, lighting, speakers, recording, signage, photographers, media there was a lot of boxes that needed to be ticked for such an important and high profile event.

Luckily for me we worked closely with Michael O’Sullivan the CEO of South Presentation Centre Ltd and I had the Fuzion team on hand to jump in at any time and on the day we had all hands on deck.

I have organised many many events over the years but with each event comes new challenges, new faces, new ideas and new expectations and so for me each one is like my first.  This can be both a good thing when the adrenaline kicks in and makes sure I don’t miss a beat and a bad thing as the nerves always seem to kick in.

Mary KennedyThe event was expertly MC’d by RTE’s Mary Kennedy, (who was as lovely in person as she comes across on TV) with the South Presentation old school hall filled with hundreds of people all eager to hear about the plans for Nano Nagle Place.

The next time my nerves kick in and have me awake at night I’ll do my best to remember ….It always works out in the end
